Here at Durant Cricket, we pride ourselves on being able to assist with projects across the spectrum of the cricketing world. In 2020, we completed work with Nottinghamshire CCC at their Lady Bay Sports Club training facility.
With help from former Glamorgan CCC groundsman, Keith Exton, we provided Notts with a bespoke netting system, designed to allow complete flexibility with the layout of the netting lanes. The option of more than 50 quality grass lanes is now available and it has transformed the facility.
The Cricketer magazine spoke to Nottinghamshire’s Director of Cricket, Mick Newell, about the new system and the effect it’s had on training.
Q:Tell us about the new facilities
“The installation of these new nets means we now have one of the best training facilities in the country, with the option of more than 50 quality grass pitches now available. This allows the nets to be used throughout the club, including academy and junior county teams”
Q:Has it made your facilities safer?
“Not having the traditional poles or uprights associated with nets has made a huge difference… the new system means that when balls are struck, the are absorbed into the netting which is much safer.”
Q:What are the benefits to your ground staff?
Steve Birks, Head Groundsman: “You can move the nets anywhere you like, which means that you can use your netting surface far more efficiently.
The other big advantage is… pushing the nets and tying them up, making maintenance so much easier, such as watering and cutting. It is so much more efficient and saves hours.”
